biography

The Homesteaders are husband-wife duo, Jason and Ashley Phelps, based out of Houston, TX.

The Homesteaders began in 2016 when Jason and Ashley were searching for a name to encapsulate who they are and what they are about. Jason is passionate about music and Jesus, and in particular taking music and worship on mission. The act of homesteading was prominent in the 19th century when pioneers were offered new land to begin populating the west. As a worship leader who lives a life of mission and discipleship beyond the stage, homesteading exemplifies his mission of developing the homesteading worship leader.

Ashley has a passion for urban homesteading in Houston and loves to bring a bit of rural living into downtown Houston. She loves the journey of trying to be self-sustainable through gardening, canning, and making food and ingredients from scratch.

Ashley has worked as a professional actor and singer since 2010, including several summer contracts at Theatre West Virginia and a number of productions in Houston. She double majored in music and theatre from Greensboro College in Greensboro, NC.

Jason has been writing music, leading worship, and performing since the late '90s and is a High School Teacher at Lutheran High North.

The Homesteaders sound can be considered Folk-Rock/Americana ranging from ballads to upbeat folky-tunes. Ashley's dark timber and power-belts, mixed with Jason's hard-hitting strumming style and powerful vocals make for a dynamic and compelling sound that naturally brings an emotive power to their listeners.
